Day 2!
The hostel has a fruit market next door so we bought fruit salads for breakfast and headed to Central Park to hire bikes. Yep, first day in 'Murica and we're off to a healthy start! We cycled around the park for a couple of hours which was really fun, managed to see so much more of the park on our bikes than if we walked - the place is huge!! After we returned the bikes we headed to Greenwich village where we ditched the healthy start and got a slice from Joe's Pizza for lunch and sat in the square to eat it. That's the third time I've had a slice from there and I don't think I'll get sick of it, it's a NYC institution for a reason! We walked around the Village for a while and then headed to Washington Square Park, where loads of kids were swimming in the fountain because it was such a hot day. We sat in the fountain for a while taking advantage of the cool water spray. After that we went down to the Staten Island ferry to get the free ferry across and see the Statue of Liberty. We were supposed to be meeting a friend of Julie's in the evening but she couldn't make it, so we headed to Times Square to see if we could get tickets for a show. We couldn't get anything for tonight unfortunately but we headed to Longacre theatre and managed to get tickets for Of Mice And Men for Thursday for $37 each!! Ridiculously cheap, the seats are terrible but at that price can't complain. We chose that play because James Franco, Chris O'Dowd and Leighton Meester are starring, I'm so excited! And will probably be starstruck on the night. We had a look around the shops in Times Square then decided to head back to the hostel for the night. But a guy selling comedy club tickets had another idea. I've never seen anyone hard sell like this guy! Julie was pretty keen to go to the comedy show, I could take it or leave it and Catherine didn't want to go. So after a LOT of convincing and haggling we decided to go, after the guy dropped the price of the tickets from $80 to $20 for all 3 of us. We headed back to the hostel to get freshened up and bought dinner from a taco truck. Not gonna lie I was a bit skeptical about this but it turned out to be pretty tasty and a very cheap dinner! So we got to the comedy club, and it got off to a good start. The warm up guy, the MC and the first 2 comedians were pretty good, were getting a lot of laughs and audience participation. Then it went downhill... The next couple of guys were hit and miss with a lot of jokes a little too controversial. Then the last guy we stayed for was clearly high, didn't have a set and was generally weird and terrible! Luckily we had a table at the back of the club and managed to sneak out without drawing attention. I'm glad we did it though, the first half was fun and I've never really been to a stand up show before.
So I think it's fair to say we packed a lot in on day 2! I still don't think the time difference has caught up with me as I'm wide awake on day 3 at 6.15 again..
