We had our trip to the Mekong Delta today. We were told to be at reception for 7.45, so arrived a bit early just in case. However, we didn't end up getting picked up until 8.15, and were the only ones in the minibus to the station. Here we got on an already full bigger bus, which made us think we may have been forgotten about to start with!
We left Ho Chi Minh at about 8.45 and after one rest stop we came to where our tour would start at about 11am.
We started by getting on a small ferry type boat which took us across the river to a honey farm, where we were shown working honeycombs and got to taste honey tea which was amazing! This was followed by a short walk to somewhere where we tasted different kinds of fruit whilst watched by some live Vietnamese music, which included a rendition of 'if you're happy and you know it'!
From here we got into small row boats, where we were taken down the river by locals through narrow waterways with palm leaves arched over: it was beautiful and one of my favourite parts of the day. This took us to a candy factory where they talked us through how to make coconut candy and let us try some of it as well as some snake wine! I preferred the candy and Shane the wine, which in thought was disgusting!
Outside of the factory there were several horse and carts waiting which took us to the restaurant where we sat and ate some lunch. This was actually quite nice although I can't say for definite what the meat was! Around the restaurant they had a crocodile farm and also an enclosure with some porcupines. This was a bit sad to see as the enclosures were pretty basic and made of concrete. During this time we instead sat in the shade talking to an Australian couple who were also on the trip.
When our free time had finished we all got onto a motorised canoe which took us the short distance down the river to get back on the original ferry boat. This then took us back to the mainland and our bus.
When we were planning our time in Ho Chi Minh the tunnels were a definite trip and the Mekong Delta was a bit of a time filler. However, I really enjoyed today and am really glad we did it!
Tonight we are planning on going for food and drinks at the night market again! We are going to the waterpark for my birthday tomorrow so won't to have a good nights sleep ready for that!
