Ok... What I am calling the 'Trevi Fountain Incident'.
On Tuesday September 6, there was a complete public transport strike (this has nothing to do with what happened later, just something worth mentioning). Now, in Adelaide, that wouldn't really be a huge problem. Sure, a few people would be put out and have to find alternate ways to work, but in a city like Rome where most people rely on buses, trains and the metro (subway/underground), it caused utter chaos. Taxis and tour buses were the only form of transport, unless you had your own car or bike. We were on a hop on hop off tour bus and a trip that should have taken 25minutes took almost two hours. On top of that, majority of the seating was on the upper level, which did not have a roof and it was stinking hot.
Anyway, our intended destination was Trevi Fountain, though the bus driver decided not to stop there and we had to walk 15 minutes to get there. After looking at the fountain and doing the whole photo thing, we went for ice cream. I ordered mine. I pulled out my wallet, I paid for it. I returned my wallet to my bag, zipped my bag shut. I grabbed my ice cream, turned to walk outside and noticed my bag was open. I went to close it, thinking maybe I didn't actually close it when I thought I did and saw that my wallet wasn't there.
It had been stolen.
There were two police women right there, I told them what happened, they told me to go find the police station. After 30 minutes of walking around, following numerous directions from different people, we finally found the station and reported it, to a policeman that didn't speak any English. Fun times.
Then I got to spend the rest of my day cancelling credit cards and all that..
Aside from all my cards and some cash, nothing else was taken. It's a major pain in the arse but I still have access to money, so that's the main thing. The biggest annoyance is the fact that I'm going to need a drivers licence for when we drive in the US and most of the events and stuff we have organised in the US need the credit card they were booked on, so it ought to be interesting when it comes time to deal with all that.
But yeah.. That was my not quite so fun visit to the Trevi Fountain.
