We've been in Melbourne for a week now and we love it! We spent the first couple of days in the seaside town of St Kilda which was lovely. It was just like being at the seaside at home with the cold wind whipping through our hair and chilling our ears and noses. The main street of St Kilda was full of little cake shops, cafes, shops and bars so it'd have been rude not to venture out for food and drinks!
After a couple of days of being in Melbourne we found a house to live in one of Melbourne's suburbs, called Abbotsford. We're renting a room in an Aussie guys house and it's really homely so we're very happy. It was such a good feeling emptying the backpacks and putting our clothes in drawers and a wardrobe, like normal people, but they are rather empty!
The area we're living in is really nice, across the road we have Victoria Park which is an Aussie rules footy pitch, down the road we have the Yarra river which has some great walks and then a short walk from us there is two shopping streets; Smith Street and Brunswick Street. Both Smith and Brunswick Street are packed with cafes, bars, cool individual shops and restaurants, it seems to be where a lot of the 'hipsters' head to. We headed there ourselves last night for food and drink with a couple from home. Needless to say we are hanging today!
We've had to go out shopping a couple of times to buy some jumpers, coats and then some smart clothes for interviews and such like. We've also bought a laptop ($150 bargain!!) so hopefully we'll be able to upload our pictures more often.
We have been in no hurry to be 'tourists' this week because we know we're going to be here for a while so we've just relaxed and got ourselves sorted. Next week however, we are going to do some exploring and join in with all the Chinese people taking pictures of everything haha! So our next blog should be a bit more exciting!
We're in the process of learning the rules to Aussie rules football so that we can go to a game or two. It's such a fast game though with lots going on so I'm struggling a bit but Davie seems to be picking it up. We're chosen our teams; Davie is following Collingwood because they play in black and white and are knicknamed 'The Magpies' and I've chosen a team called Richmond because they are knicknamed 'The Tigers'.
We've been told off already for how we pronounce 'Melbourne'; we were saying mel-born but it should be pronounce mel-burn so we've had to correct ourselves there, we want to fit in afterall!
We're looking forward to doing some exploring and when we start working we're going to use our weekends to explore the rest of Victoria, maybe even try some skiing in Mt Buller. But for now we are going to feed our hangovers fatty pizza, garlic bread and fizzy cola!
