We've had a couple of weekends pass since we last updated the blog so here is what we have been up to:
Saturday 3rd August:
We caught the train to an area south of the city called Prahran. As always when exploring somewhere new we got off the train completely disorientated and just followed where everyone else went....we struck lucky that day and found the main shopping street; Chapel Street. Whilst on Chapel Street we found Prahran food market so we had a little wander around taking in all the free samples of the fresh produce (sausages, dips, cheese etc), we ended up buying some very yummy honey lamb and rosemary sausages in preparation for the hangover's we both knew we'd have the following day. Whilst at the market we had a superb coffee each at the Market Cafe which we'd had recommended to us.
Continuing along Chapel Street we darted in and out of the shops, there are a lot of designer shops in the area so we mostly did window shopping but we still picked up some bargains in the sales - Davie 'the shoe w****' (he has more shoes than me, seriously!) bought not one but two pairs of shoes and a very smart blazer jacket so he was well on his way to being suited and booted. I bought myself a pair of black heels, with a rather modest heel - it had been months since I'd worn anything other than pumps and flip flops!
After we'd shopped ourselves out we needed to refuel so we found a lovely Italian Cafe/Restaurant called Caffe e Cucina to get some food and drink. We chose very well because the food was to die for!!! It was real Italian food, Italian wine and Italian staff so it was like we'd been transported to Italy itself. It was lush - my Jakymiw-Jackson side of the family would have loved it. We even finished up with a limoncello (for me) and a grappa (for Davie) in true Italian style.
That evening we got dolled up and headed out to Southbank in the city for our Japanese meal at Miyako. The food was amazing and we got to sample the sushi and sashimi with our starters followed by salmon teriyaki and wagyu style porterhouse (beef) and the most amazing pudding. I still have no idea what it was but itb was good!
After food we continued along Southbank and enjoyed a drink or two, okay maybe a few more than two! We ended up in the Crown Casino so we spent the last of our vouchers and amazingly Davie won so we headed out to one of their roof top bars and finished the night off with a drink and some spectacular views.
On the Sunday we feed our hangovers with a greasy breakfast and a lazy day!
Friday 9th August:
We met up with a couple of my old school friends, Steve and Maria, who also happen to be in Melbourne, in St Kilda. We were meant to get the last bus home but it didn't happen. The night started off in a bar which did $1 pizza's with any drink purchase, whilst here we enjoyed a spot of Jenga although it did get quite intense at one point. 4am we finally stumbled home. Needless to say we did not surface until 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday 10th August:
After shaking one almighty hangover off we had to transform ourselves into civilised human beings because we had a night at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra ahead of us.
We took our seats at Hamer Hall, neither of us not really knowing what to expect as it was a first for us both, and we were blown away. The Orchestra permormed Prokofiev's "Symphony No.1 Classical", followed by Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo theme" and then before the interval we got a solo performance from the Cello player Li-Wei Qin. After the interval the Orchestra performed Stravinsky's "Petrushka" and it was beautiful, we both had goosebumps. We both said it was something that we'd like to do again.
Sunday 11th August:
After spending most of Saturday in bed hungover we were determined to make the most of Sunday so we jumped out of bed bright eyed and bushy tailed and headed out for a nice, long, refreshing walk around the Yarra Bend Park. We stopped off at Abbotsford Convent bakery for coffee and cake, the building itself isn't used as a convent anymore and instead it houses a bakery, restaurant, and a wealth of galleries and well being rooms.
Monday 12th August:
If gluttony was an Olympic Sport Davie and I would win! On Monday we headed out for all-you-can-eat dumplings and boy did we eat all we could! They had to roll us out the restaurant...
Friday 16th August:
I spent the afternoon booking our ski trip to Mt Buller, we are so excited! We are booked in for Friday 6th September for two nights so Davie will spend his birthday on top of a mountain probably laughing at me falling over (I haven't skied before), how cool!
Friday evening we ate out again, this time we went for Indian food. Due to the heavy antics of the previous weekend we decided to have a low-key weekend so after food we headed back home with a bottle of red wine and some cheese.
Saturday 17th August:
After breakfast we headed into the city to purchase our bicycles. I am now a very proud owner of a lavender coloured, vintage style bike and Davie is the proud owner of a black road bike. The guy that sold us the bikes was a scouser so he gave us a really good deal and threw in loads of accessories (lock, helmets, lights etc) for free. The only problem was that we had so much stuff that we couldn't cycle home on the bikes so we had to push the bikes to the train station and jump on the train with them (we must have looked like right fools!)
Once we had unloaded all our stuff we headed straight out on our new bikes to the Yarra Bend Park. My bike is sooooooo comfortable but not very practical for hill climbing, whereas Davie can fly up the hills no problem. There were a few occassions, especially towards the end of the bike ride, where I had to get off and push the bike uphill! Anyway by the end of the trip we were both exhausted and had a severe case of jelly-leg-itis, it's a real condition don't you know!
There was only one thing that would cure our jelly-leg-itis and that was head out to Victoria Street for a Chinese Banquet, so that is exactly what we did. It was absolutely delicious and we devoured the whole lot!
Sunday 18th August:
Yesterday we decided to head back to Prahran to get some more sausages from the market (I'm making toad-in-the-hole for tea tonight) and whilst there we tried a different cafe for coffee and cake. The cakes were to die for, me being me chose the most chocolatety one I could find and Davie opted for an orange cake, both were devine and I felt quite sick afterwards (gluttony strikes again!) but luckily the coffee took the edge of the sickliness.
After the market we had another walk along Chapel Street before heading home.
So that about brings us up-to-date. This week we are off to the pictures (tomorrow) and then we are out again with Steve and Maria at the weekend for Maria's birthday. I'm sure we'll head out on the bikes as well, hangovers permitting.
