After Brisbane we headed an hour north to The Glass House Mountains where we spent the day roaming around and climbing mountains which were the remains of old volcanic plugs.
The following day we went to Australia zoo which was amazing! There were a lot of plaques and memorials dedicated to Steve Irwin so the legend well and truly lives on. We saw lots of crocodiles and alligators - some of the salties were massive. We also watched a demonstration the keepers did with the crocs where they show how fast the crocs can move to grab something from the side of the water. They also demonstrated how high the crocs can leap up out of the water using their tails to propel them (I thought the keeper was going to lose his arm!) and they also showed us how slow they were out of the water so I needn't of worried so much about getting eaten that night in the outback.
The zoo had an area where the kangaroos roam free so that you can fuss and feed them, I'm a bit wary of kangas after someone at work told me they can disembowel you with their sharp claws but theses seemed like friendly ones so I gave them a quick pet but only after I'd looked around to check all the other people had their stomachs in place!
The tigers were my favourite, they are just so majestic and memorising. One of them was a proper little poser too - he kept coming up to the glass where everyone was taking photos and sitting in front of them. It breaks my heart to think that the tiger could be extinct in the near future because they are just so beautiful.
The day after the zoo we made our way up to the Sunshine Coast where we spent a couple of days on the beach. The first day we sunned ourselves on Coolum Beach and the second day we spent on Noosa Beach. Noosa was gorgeous - white sands, clear blue seas and rainforest all along the headland. A tropical paradise. We spent most of the morning on the main beach which was fairly busy but in the afternoon we went for a walk along the coast which took us through the National Park and brought us out by all the coves and quieter beaches. We could easily have stayed there forever.
The next destination was Fraser Island which is the only sand island in the world (I think!) The whole island is sand with thick forest growing throughout, it also has fresh water lakes you can swim in and a lovely beach that runs along the whole east coast of the island. We caught the ferry to Fraser from Hervey Bay, on the journey we seen dolphins swimming in the sea, it was incredible. Daveo was the first to spot them so we soon had a load of people swarming around us with cameras trying to elbow us out of our seats!!
When we arrived on Fraser we were loaded onto a 4WD bus which bounced its way along the sand paths to our first stop - Central Station which was an old forest station. The station was decommissioned when the Island was awarded National Park status in the 90's so we did a walking track through the forest along a creek.
After the walk we headed to a freshwater lake for a swim then off to one of the resorts where we told to help ourselves to the buffet lunch. About 5 sittings later we had huge bellies and the meat sweats.
After lunch we drove along the beach which was incredible. Along the way we stopped off at the coloured sand pinnacles, and old ship wreck which got washed ashore during a cyclone and we also stopped at a creek where we were able to wade up the creek and float back down. Lots of fun! From here we headed back to ferry along the bumpy sand roads. We both said we'd love to go back to Fraser with our own 4WD and explore the whole island. It was completely different to what I was expecting which was lots of sand dunes but it was basically like driving through the forest on a very bumpy road.
After Fraser we spent a couple of days driving to get to Airlie Beach where we are now. We've had a lazy day today by the lagoon - no swimming in the sea here due to the box jellyfish! Tomorrow we heading out on a tour of the Whitsunday Islands so we get to spend some time on Whitehaven beach which is supposedly the best beach in Australia (fingers crossed its sunny).
Lots of love, L & D xxx
