We got to Melbourne early on Thursday morning and met Tasha at Southern Cross station. It was so exciting to see Tash and also really handy to have someone to help us find our way around straight away! We headed straight to Odette's friends (Jodie and Leila) house in St Kilda to drop our stuff off and then went back into Melbourne centre to find a travel agent to organise the rest of our trip up the East Coast! We ended up spending HOURS in the travel shop! Poor Tash must have wished she didn't come to meet us!
In the evening Jodie and Leila took us all to a really cool restaurant called 'Lentils as anything' which is run solely on donations and by volunteers, so at the end of the meal you don't get a bill you just make a donation of what you think the food is worth! The food was actually really lovely, I was a bit sceptical about it beforehand but it also suited our backpacker budget!
The next evening me and Oddy made nacho's and fajita's for everyone as a thank you for letting us stay at their house which was so kind of them, especially Jodie who gave up her bed for us! On Saturday they took us to a place on the outskirts of Melbourne called Fitzroy for breakfast - it was the best breakfast menu I have ever seen and the food and coffee was amazing! I had smoked salmon on a crepe with asparagus, dill sauce and poached eggs...delicious!! We then went to a lovely little market and wandered around some of the shops then headed back to St Kilda to get ready for our Saturday night out in the city! Typically for me and oddy, we were really unlucky with the weather! It was raining on and off all day and night, but we still had a really good night and went to some cool bars.
On Sunday we gave Jodie her bed back and moved ourselves to Tasha's house just down the road to stay the night! She took us to her friends house to see some 1 day old Staffy puppies which were so adorable and teeny! We had a girly night in that evening with a movie and did homemade pizzas for dinner which was lovely.
On Sunday we did our Great Ocean Road tour which was cool. It wasn't actually what I was expecting at all so I suppose I was a tiny bit disappointed but I still really enjoyed the day. I think maybe we were totally spoilt with beautiful scenery in NZ so things don't seem as amazing! Tash had arranged for us to go for dinner at a place in St Kilda called La Roche that evening which was another yummy foody experience! The portions were mammoth, but it was delicious!
That evening we had to find a hostel and made a big error to not have booked something in advance, we ended up in the most revolting place I have ever been! It was so vile we actually got the giggles at one point because it felt like we were in prison! During the night I was woken up by the sound of a drunk prostitute outside our window shouting abuse at someone so I was totally exhausted the next day but actually delighted to hear my alarm at 6am and being able to leave that place for our flight to Alice Springs!
