Mantaray island 6th Sept
Got there from Otto and Fannys about 1500 on Tuesday, had bure number 1 right next to the beach with a balcony. Resort is quite new so very nice, upper class basic! Went snorkelling of the beach and there were millions of fish everywhere but didnt see any mantas but did see a stingray. Dinner at set times here too, 1900 here though. Was a buffet, very nice spread. Sat with a couple who had met each other in Fiji, were on the end of a 12 day tour, she was also a nurse so had good chat with them. After though there was only their tour group, 2 tables of about 30 and us on our little table so made a getaway to our balcony before the fijian dancing started!
Wednesday (today) woke up to lots of rain and wind, after breakfast though it is now blue skies so hope it has stopped for the day! So going to soak up some sun now and find some mantarays.
Weather improved on Wednesday afternoon so lay on the white beach, snorkelled in the green waters and lay in one of the many hammocks! The resort is close to the mantaray hangout (hence the name) so they go and check if there are any around before beated the drum and taking people out to snorkel with them. So piled in the boat and went out to the spot, there were about 50 of us chasing this one 5m manta (there have been as many as 12 there) in massive waves. Jumped in the water and waves were huge, was impossible to snorkel and couldn't find him. Got back in the boat and he went beside us so sat on the side to get in and the boat bounced and i fell backwards bashing my head and cutting my arm on the steal seat! Deceided at this point a manta wasn't worth knocking myself out or drowning over. Paul had also got back in another boat after near drowning. They said we could go back the next day but there wern't any.
Thursday we had a lovely breakfast before kayaking to the oppisite island 1km away. Was abit choppy but improved when we were over there. Went snorkelling in a lovely green lagoon area that we had seen from our restaurant area. Saw some lovely coral, fish and loads of the cool fat fingered blue sea stars. Paul carried one out to the shore so we could take a photo before putting him back! Couldn't lie on the beach as the wind was causing a sand storm so kayaked back and lazed around till our 1400 boat SOUTH to Bounty island.
