After a slightly better nights sleep, thanks to the foam mats the Irish girls left behind, we were woken up at 6:30 again(!) and had to pack up all the tents ready for Wayne to load up his roof rack while we enjoyed our last Fraser Island activity - a swim in Lake Wabby!
Wayne dropped us off and told us which way to walk to the lake and what time to be back. We were all a bit dubious as it was over 2km walking through the forest to get to the lake, a lot of it was uphill, and as we got near it started to rain heavily! The route we walked took us through the eucalypt forest which surrounds the lake on three sides, and then out onto the giant sandblow which surrounds the fourth side. We'd never seen anything like the sandblow, it was like being on a different planet (just like when we visited Bryce Canyon in America!) All you could see was sand and trees, no water to be seen until we reached the top of the steep sand 'cliff' and had to walk down towards the beautiful lake (the deepest on the island) which looked green because of the reflections of all the trees around it. Apparently the sand is encroaching the lake at a rate of about 3m a year, so it may look very different in a few years time! Anyway, by the time we actually got into the lake, it was raining torrentially! It was quite a nice experience being in the lake in the rain, but not everyone else was impressed so we all ended up leaving about an hour earlier than we had to. The walk back was also amusing - me and Kelly had our sopping wet towels wrapped around us and were carrying our half wet clothes to change into when we got back to the toilets at the beach. The rain only stopped when we got back to the beach - typical! We got changed and dried as best we could, and then we drove back to Eurong for a lunch of pie and chips!
And then it was time to say goodbye to Fraser Island after an awesome 3 days. The sun was shining all the way back and we were all looking forward to having a shower and a proper bed to sleep in again.
Back at the hostel we were put in a room with 5 others from our trip - the 3 girls from Finland, Lena from Germany and Melissa, the most annoying girl in the world - fantastic! (Luckily, we didn't see much of her for the rest of the day). The one thing everyone wanted to do first was have a shower but…the water was off! So we had to wait half an hour before anyone was able to have a shower (there were a few angry-looking girls wandering around in towels who were NOT happy!).
We were all feeling a lot better after a shower, and even better after a pint in the bar! We spent the rest of the afternoon uploading the photos from the trip. We couldn't be bothered to go shopping so ate tea in the hostel, and then had an early night as we were so tired. It was nice to be in a proper bed again!
