Our last day in Ubud L It's been a fantastic place to start our South-East Asia aventure, and we'll both miss it even though we've only been here a few days!
We planned to have an even cheaper day today, so we had a lie in and didn't make it to breakfast until about 10:30! Not that it bothered our hosts, who sprang into action as soon as we appeared. Today is a special day for the Balinese - they celebrate Kuningan, a ceremony that takes place at temples all over the island to mark the end of the New Year celebrations. Each family spends hours preparing offerings the previous day, in the form of food (rice, fruit etc) and lowers. They then take them to the family temple in the early morning and visit every temple in the village, then in the afternoon spend time together at home. We've also seen lots of children parading through the streets in dragon costumes over the past few days - apparently it brings good luck to the restaurants if they give them a coin when they pass.
After breakfast, we tried to go into the local museum for a look around, but it was closed for the ceremony, so instead we headed up a side street we hadn't yet explored and stopped at a small warung for a drink and to escape the heat! Their prices were very cheap (it was basically a family kitchen with a few table and chairs in front!) and we decided to come back later for dinner.
We had a wander around a few shops and picked up a few bits that we needed, before heading back to the homestay. We spent the next few hours trying to keep cool and we Skyped Laura's Mam and Dad.
At tea time we headed back to our cheap find from earlier and enjoyed our favourtes - Nasi Goreng (fried rice with chicken) and Mie Goreng (fried noodles) as well as banana fritters and Dadar Gulung (Balinese coconut pancakes) all for a few pounds! The banana fritters did taste a bit too much like potato for Laura's liking, but at that price we can't complain!
Back at the homestay, we had another Skype session - this time with the Baileys. We finally got to 'meet' Rosie after George nicely woke her up for us! We were amazed at how much he has come on since we last saw him - he's a proper chatterbox now! Then it was time to pack (boo!) - we leave after breakfast in the morning.
Looking forward to a few days on the beach in Sanur!
