Day 2 at the Magic Sponge...we got up late today and ate breakfast at the bar while chatting to the manager, William. he's a really friendly American guy from Alaska and the perfect host for a guesthosue full of Westerners! We needed to find an ATM so he showed us where to find one that wouldn't charge us (the other one in town charged $4!) and he pointed out a few things to see in town.
We headed out for a walk into Kampot on what was another incredibly hot day. Despite William's directions, we got a bit lost trying to find the ATM so were dripping with sweat by the time we eventually found it...tiem to head to the river for a cold drink! There's not really much to see in Kampot itself (most people hire bikes and head to a few sights nearby) but the riverfront is a nice place to stroll along and stop for a drink, so that's what we did! First stop was a place called Frangipani for a fruit shake, follwed by a place called Rikitikitavi (as in the Kipling stories) where we had some amazing citrus mint freezes, which were like a Mojito but without the booze - it was a bit early for the real thing! And that was pretty much it for the sights of Kampot! Lots of the buildings were old French colonial villas but none of them are open as museums - a bit of a missed opportunity there! We needed to get out of the heat so we haeded back to the Sponge and sat around in the bar again, catching up online and writing the blog.
In the evening, we headed back to the riverside for dinner to a place recommended by William called the Rusty Keyhole. We'd heard good things about their pork ribs, and they definitely lived up to their reputation - a huge portion and the meat was amazing, served with a pile of mash - proper comfort food!
Back at the hotel again, William was closing up early so we headed next door to Blissful Guesthouse and met up with the Irish people from last night for a few drinks - an easy, lazy day in Kampot!
