Today we started our PADI Open Water course by taking a few theory lessons (we had read a chapter - only 70 pages - in the diver manual in advance too) and then went into the swimming pool at the diving school to have a go at it.
We had some basic skill lessons in the pool; for example: we breathed under water and then borrowed air from a buddy, i.e. changing regulators (the mouthpiece that delivers air). I realized quite fast that scuba diving isn't my thing, even though I enjoy swimming and diving otherwise. For me, breathing under water felt weird and uncomfortable, even a bit scary from the start and even though I got a little bit used to it doing some of the tasks, it didn't feel good. I couldn't go on. At that point I had been under shallow water for under a minute at a time, so I couldn't image being under water (that would be a lot deeper as well) for over thirty minutes at a time.
Fortunately I'll get some of my money back as I quit the course. But I'll still join the boat ride to the dive site (as Laura will finish her course) and swim/snorkel there, or simply enjoy the view above sea level. 8)
Well, diving is not for everyone but at least I've tried it and now know it isn't for me. I hope the surf course in Bali goes better. At least that'll be on the surface of water. :)
Toodaloo!
