After a good old catch up with Lucy via phone, whereby we planned a trip to Ireland when we get back for Lucy's birthday, we set off for the hour and a half drive to Wellington. We didn't really know where to go to park our van so I quickly went into the I-site to pick up a map and to ask where would be the cheapest place. The lady said Rowena's travel lodge and Base would be the cheapest but didn't think they would have space. I asked for their contact details anyway, and sure enough they both did have space. I thought, since Rowena's wasn't a multi-location company like Base is, maybe they would have free Wi-Fi, so I suggested we went there since they were the same price. They don't offer Wi-Fi, but it kind of reminds us of the Reef, so should be fun.
Our ferry to the South isn't until the 6th, so have plenty of time to sightsee in Welly, so we decided just to have a wander around. We went up Cuba Street, which was one of the highlights mentioned in the Lonely Planet, and had a nose in the shops there. We started to head up to the cable car, but then decided to have a walk along the waterfront instead, where some people were practising for the up and coming dragon boat race which we saw advertised.
We headed back to the hostel, and decided to take advantage of happy hour in a busy looking bar. Eventually the man on the next table from us started taking to us, and then two girls wanted to sit on his table, as there was no room for them anywhere else, so we formed a little group. We were going to go back to the falafel place mentioned in the Lonely Planet, but we had tried one of the falafels beforehand, and since discovering the place in Brisbane, we weren't that impressed, so decided to go with the girls to 'Chow' which had a 2 for 1 offer going on because it was a Monday. Indie, the man, joined us late, although the waiter was a bit hesitant to add him as he wasn't sure we wanted him there. Everyone ordered a curry each, except for me who got the seafood laksa noodle soup, and then we had 3 dishes to share to start- Vietnamese paper rolls, tahini (a type of fish) wrapped in banana leaves and shrimp wantons. There was loads leftover but we only paid $18 each, which was very good given how nice it was (and that only works out at about £9!). The girls have persuaded us that if we can change our ferry crossover, we should stay for the 7s- some sort of sporting event- as they made it sound like a good cultural experience, as Australia day was when we were in Cairns. They were extremely friendly, and invited us to celebrate it with them if we can stay a bit longer.
