The pile I had sorted out of stuff to leave in Surfer's (so that I could fit everything in my rucksack) kept getting smaller and smaller as I persuaded myself that I did actually need shorts/ pyjama tops/ etc, so that by the time we left it looked a bit pathetic. Hopefully some of the stuff goes to a good home though as it's time to start repaying the 'free stuff' benefits.
I think the driver of the bus to Byron Bay was new to his job- it seemed like we were going round in circles and at one point we nearly got stuck whilst he was trying to do a U-turn around a very small residential roundabout. We checked into a hostel we drove past, and the receptionist told us about an award winning sushi restaurant, so we went to have lunch there. We shared a really nice plate of butternut squash tempura sushi, and I had a cream cheese and carrot roll which was a bit tasteless (despite its reputation, I'm still vouching for sushi paradise). We topped it off with frozen yoghurt with toppings in the shop near our hostel. Rachel had told us that locals go up to the lighthouse to watch the sunset, which we did. The walk up there was quite a good workout. There was a very grumpy woman who obviously needed to practise meditating more- she was moaning because I had walked in front of her, blocking her sun for all of 1 second. It was somehow OK for her friend to stop and talk to her though.
After dinner we had a nap, and then got showered to attempt going out. We went to Cheeky Monkeys first, which seemed like it was just a jungle themed Woolshed, and so didn't feel like we were missing much when we left to go to Cocomangas, a gay friendly club which I had heard did good cocktails, including one served in a jam jar. However it had closed by the time we got there so I never got to try it. We admitted defeat (we were very tired from last night) and went to the hostel to go to sleep.
