Prior to our appointments we hiked up to a viewpoint to get our blood flowing and muscles loose. Almost immediately after laying down on the outdoor deck surrounded by nature, it started to pour. The sound of the rain made our treatment even more unique and relaxing.
It was time to move again. We had a ferry lined up to Koh Phi Phi Island and our bus was to arrive only 20 minutes after leaving the spa. Street food was calling our names so we jogged to the bottom of the hill to "take away" thai tea, fruit, pad thai and fried rice. Miraculously, we managed to all get showered, packed and checked out before the driver arrived.
Dark green mountains and limestone cliffs that are enveloped by white sand beaches showed themselves after an hour and a half. We were pleasantly reminded of the British Virgin Islands. However, unloading from the ferry, we knew this was a whole different ball game. Making our way through crowded walk streets that seemed to have no directional order, we were on sensory overload. Religiously dressed natives walked next to transvestites, cats were everywhere, punk rock blared from bamboo tattoo shops and pristine beaches still showed signs of the previous nights party. It was a small island with a big city vibe. Not exactly what we expected!
Location wise, our hotel could not have been better. Beach front and close to town, we scored again.
After a bit of probing the locals for recommendations, we climbed rickety stairs to the roof of a tri-level restaurant for a sunset dinner. Walking around town we scoped out the activities available, got a few opinions and booked our tours.
The idea was to head home and get a full nights rest but upon seeing the fire dancing and wildness on the beach, we figured we needed to check it out. There is something in the air here and you can't avoid feeling the energy. We jumped rope that was on fire, ran through a fire ring and danced a bit. Mainly we were spectators to the madness. It was the night before the full moon after all.
