Hola Team South,
Welcome on our virtual walk around Spain and Portugal. My name is Lara Anderson and I will be your tour guide.
Now to get you up to speed. We have been busy. This weekend we gathered at the Calgary international airport. We took flight AC 170 to Toronto to meet our team mates Keith, Tim, Jennifer, and Marlene (from Winnipeg). Then we took flight AA3862 to New York and then flight BA1566 to Madrid. Chantal's luggage did not arrive but they promised it will be here by tomorrow (sure). We managed to sleep well on the plane and arrived at 6:38 am. Over a leisurely breakfast we pulled out our Spanish- English dictionaries to prepare for the days ahead. Helena downloaded a app on her phone work as a translator. Isn't she clever. Thank goodness Gloria has come along to help us out with the language too. After this we spent the day sightseeing and adjusting to the time change (8 hours difference). We saw the Royal Palace, Madrid's most beautiful building, and the largest royal palace in Western Europe. We sat and people watched in the Plaza Mayor. Toured the Templo de Debod - an authentic 2nd Century BC Egyptian temple in the middle of Madrid! On the way back to our hotel we passed by the Puerta de Alcalá (check out the attached picture) a Madrid icon, which is an old city gate. It even has a song dedicated to it! We are staying in La Gran Via District and we found some great restaurants. We had some delicious tappas and sangria.
We headed home early (yes, even Lance) to get a good night sleep before we start our trek on Monday morning. From Madrid we will head North east on highway on our way to Pamplona.
