So here it is the morning of the 10th. We have sat and had our breakfast on the patio. Still at Pagoda Lodge where we are staying for 4 nights. Very tranquil and beautiful.
On Tuesday we spent the day in KeriKeri. Walked into town and then to the basin. All very beautiful. We saw the oldest building in New Zealand and visited the church the missionaries had built.
Yesterday we drove to Cape Reinga - right to the north of North Island. I can't begin to describe the scenery. It is so dramatic and beautiful and changes so quickly from forest to hills to coast. We stopped at some beautiful bays on the east coast - Mangonui, Cable Bay, Coopers Bay - wide expanse of beach and nobody there. Cape Reinga was quite busy the photo shows the lighthouse. There was a lot of Mauri history there and it is where the spirits of the dead travel. The Tasmanian Sea joins the Pacific Ocean and the colour of the sea was turquoise.
We then drove back trying to find places to stop on the ninety mile beach. Some of the roads went through the forests and were very rough with loads of dust and loose stones. The first stop we found was deserted and the beach had a haze over, quite dramatic and very hot. We drove on to the bottom of the ninety mile beach - Ahipara. No quad bikes but we swam in the sea and jumped the waves. Drove back to KeriKeri a different way from west to east and Middle Earth was all around us.
