Next we stayed at Jays lodge in Marracuane, which is a little group of thatched huts on the beach. It was very quiet mainly because the South African school holidays had just ended so we passed a great convoy of 4x4's going the other way. We had lots of sunshine and had the noise of the waves lapping on the beach to put us to sleep instead of the hippos? much better. To get to Jays as you can see from the photos there is a road to follow from Maputo, on the map it is orange so you would assume it is a "B" road, obviously B means Z in Mozambique as it had more holes than the mozzie nets and we navigated a few log bridges to cross some of the gaps. Before arriving at the lodge we also had the unique experience of a Mozambique ferry, which runs to he captains own schedule of when he feels there is enough people or cars to cross so it could take 10min to cross, or an hour ? This is followed by another 4x4 only track, lots of sand and lots of holes! Not only do you have to negotiate the road you also have to avoid the native adults walking by with huge piles of sticks or large cans of water on their heads! And the thousands of children who run after you demanding money or sweets or just try to jump on the Landy or break bits off!! Nice huh! We appreciate they are poor but it is very difficult because if you give to one there are twenty more who then want something.
the weather is now constant sunshine ... sorry to upset anyone in England were it may be raining, we even went swimming in the Indian ocean. We stayed a couple of nights here relaxing and we had our first Potjie (said poikie) this is a cast iron pot that you put over the fire a cook a one pot stew in, everything is in layers you don't stir it until the end. We had a few with J.P's brother Jimmy but ours was lovely too.
