Day 42 Whitianga to Russell
What a difference a day makes, it's really raining hard today, the sea that yesterday was a deep turquoise and calm is now a charcoal grey and choppy. Hoping desperately that things will improve as we drive north. On the road by 9:15am as we have at least a 6 hour drive ahead of us. The rain stayed with us for a good couple of hours but stopped and it looked brighter when we were about half an hour from Auckland which raised our spirits somewhat, however by the time we had reached Auckland the mist and rain returned again; a bit different from the day we flew in when it was brilliantly sunny. We did manage about a half hour drive in full sunshine and thought, yes this is it all the way now, but no the rain has returned and there is the possibility of a cyclone hitting the east coast of the north island on Wednesday. The journey generally was relatively uneventful with the exception of roadworks numbering into double figures - and I thought the UK was bad for always having the road up. The best or the worst part depending on your outlook was that I had the benefit of the gravel road today as we took another alternative route to avoid the ferry. No more minor roads from now on although I think I have probably qualified for the off road stages of a rally somewhere! We have arrived at the cottage which is lovely and I'm sure Russell and the Bay of Islands will be fantastic in the sunshine…. Hey wait a minute what's that I see breaking through, maybe there is a glimmer of hope………
