The Beginning of Something New
I left the Radisson Hotel close to Heathrow at 5 in the morning, taking the shuttle bus to Heathrow. I could barely even lift my rugsack from the ground let alone put it on my back. I was dreading how this was going to turn out in a backpacking tour... I prayed that I would get stronger and more capable of lifting it, I mean, man I was pretty impressed that I managed to pack for 4 months in a rugsack! Me! I should have got a prize or something.
My GOD. Heathrow Airport. Its more like entering into an American prison. The security queues are miles long, windy affairs, it took me over an hour to get through security. Now that's never happened to me before, half an hour is long enough, one would think.
The flight to Madrid was nothing extraordinary, but I had to wait so long for boarding, I was convinced I was going to miss my connection, and as a matter of fact, I had to run to my gate when we arrived in Madrid Airport - which is such a fancy airport by the way, so clean and shiny. Got a rather bad case of the runs while I was in the airport, so I had to make a stop on the way to the gate, but I made it nonetheless.
I was already getting a taste for Latin American culture in the journey, the plane was only stopping in Antigua and going on to San Jose, Costa Rica, the latin americans definitely utilise their transport systems to the most.
Flying with Iberia wasn't something I was, well, looking forward to. The Spanish Aeroflot, it wasn't known for its excellence in the field, to put it like that. Because I hadnt had much time in the airport, I hadnt had time to pick up any snacks for the journey, so I had some several hours completely dependent on Iberia food. And I was right to be concerned...
One meal I was served was some kind of chicken creation, but barely luke warm, I was starving at that point, but tried to avoid the chicken, only eating a few pieces. Hoping my body would be able to cope with whatever bacteria or nasty things were in it.
