The bus trip into Sarajevo was a fairly pleasant one. Although the roof did leak when it rained, but at least it was mechanically sound.I was pretty exhausted from the tour of Mostar the previous day so I didn't do very much once arriving; just went to get something to eat and slept all afternoon. When you're absolutely starving don't go to find food with an Israeli, who it seemed, due to religious rules, couldn't actually eat anything.
The following day I just wondered around the old town, visited the mass graves around the city and checked out the museum dedicated to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand; which actually had the guns used to kill him and his wife. Later in the afternoon I met up with Elissa who I met in Mostar and we ended up going out for tea with another guy from our room, then a few drinks. (In a club that seemed to play nothing more than Savage Garden)
I decided to take at least one tour whilst in Sarajevo, I chose the tunnel tour. It's a tunnel that runs under Sarajevo airport and was used to bring supplies into the city when it was surrounded by Serbian troops. There was a movie played that showed Sarajevo being bombed in '95. It was hard to believe it was the same place I had been walking around for the last few days. I picked up a couple of gifts in the old town which is famous for its handmade products. It poured down rain that afternoon making the cobblestones slippery, which made walking around it thongs incredibly difficult. I think it may have looked like I walking for the first time. I ended up going out for tea again that night, the hostel did have a kitchen but it wasn't very expensive so I made the most of it. Late that night the owner of the hostel told us about a nightclub with a 5KM (about $3.50) cover charge and free beer, vodka and gin once inside, 5 of us decided to go and check it out. I ended up drinking a lot and I was introduced to 'turbofolk' a mixture of dance music and folk music.
I had intended to catch an early bus into Serbia the next morning, but due to my excessive drinking, I over-slept and missed it. That proved to be disastrous. I ended up catching a train at 11:30am; it was supposed to take about 8 hours to arrive in Belgrade but a tree fell across the tracks near the Serbian border cutting the power to the train, we were stranded for 4.5 hours.
