With the boys remaining in Miami an additional two nights to witness an NFL game, I decided to shoot down to Mexico for an extra week to pay a visit to the Caribbean coastline destination of Cancun. Hardly the party atmosphere that you'd expect from seeing the movie, 'The Real Cancun', yet you could hardly complain about the warm, sunny weather and turquoise blue waters that was produced each day ... so much for the so called 'hurricane season'. Cancun seems to be the American/Canadians version of a quick tropical getaway, much to the equivalent of Bali & Fiji for us Sydney-siders. In fact, arriving at the Zona Hotelera, it barred stark comparisons to the Denarau Island of Fiji with its stretch of 5 star resorts alongside one another, oh and extremely humid weather.
Staying at the Westin Lagunamar Resort, it seemed like a mini paradise and the perfect way to detox, improve my deteriorating health and soak in a few rays in which would potentially be the last tanning opportunity before heading up to the cooler tempered California to round out the trip. The room was large with a comfy king bed, a spa bath, a kitchenette to finally indulge in a few home cooked meals, and most importantly a 24-hour gymnasium which I had practically to myself whenever needed, due to the remainder of the hotel guests being middle aged, overweight Americans with their young families. My first ever visit to Walmart proved to be my only expense for the week as I packed the fridge full of steaks, vegetables, cereals, fruits etc in order to eat healthier than the recent pizza diet of Miami and also rescue the budget a tad before our trip to Vegas in a couple of weeks time.
Jack & Joe decided to pop in for a visit midweek and crash for a night on their journey to Belize. It was here we decided to utilise the resort facilities and play a spot of tennis and putt putt mini golf. In try style of the trip, and in an attempt to add a touch of excitement and competitiveness to the games, we decided to add a silly bet to proceedings. The outcome saw Jack lose match play and Joe go down in stroke play; the punishment, having to secretly tie a girls shoe laces together & speak in an Irish accent for a night out ... should be quite entertaining. After an afternoon of physical exercise and running on empty, we decided to have a boys cook-out and make a Mexican feast for dinner, and a feast it was. A spread of chicken, marinated steak, pork mince and salsa nachos, it was clear our stomachs were a little too large for our eyes and there was enough leftover to make it our breakfast, lunch and dinner for the remainder of the week. The next morning the boys were en route on their road trip journey down the Quintana Roo coastline to Caye Caulker in Belize ... God help them!
The final evening saw the boys return to Cancun in one piece ahead of our early morning flight. A very relaxing week by one of the most beautiful beaches in the world which has left me feeling rather rejuvenated after a healthy week of eating and daily exercise. Ready to go and spoil all the good work by stuffing my face with copious amounts of tacos, washed down with coronas and tequila whilst living it up with all the boys in Cabo San Lucas.
