With it seemingly quite impossible to get in to Croatia for a small sum of money, the most cost effective way without having to travel half way around the world was to take 2 separate flights with a 36-hour layover in Venice. Whilst it was only a short stay back here, it did provide us with our first 'airport accommodation' of the trip (& hopefully the last). Not being able to check in at our hotel until 3pm, & arriving at Venice airport at 3am we had plenty of time to kill & plenty of sleep to catch up on; being only able to manage a mere hour the night before. Fortunately enough we all managed surprisingly well, putting our heads down next to the baggage claim, immediately falling to sleep and only to be woken at 10am to the sound of peak hour travel by all the corporates on their way to work.
With still a few hours to kill before check-in & only one full day in Venice, we decided to catch a bus back into the island and city centre to revisit a few of the sights we had done previously with Contiki over a month ago (however much cooler and less crowds this time around). We stopped in at St Marks square for a gelato & pizza, whilst opting to pass on the limoncello this time around, before setting out to find the much-advertised Venice casino to no prevail (seems we'll need to wait till Vegas to get our gambling fix). After a long day on our feet, again getting lost in Venice, it was back to our hotel to get our first decent nights sleep in an actual bed in 3 nights; I hardly remember my head hitting the pillow. The next day was a chance to upload photos and catch up with everyone back home before heading back to the airport for our flight to Split, with the face seeming to make a very speedy recovery just in time for our Croatia Sailing week.
