The end of Croatia Sailing signalled the first of our 'free weeks' where us boys had the chance to do our own travels. Knowing exactly how I'd be feeling after a 7 day contiki, I had pre-booked a ferry ticket and an apartment at Bol on Brac Island, off the coast of Split, where I would kick back and relax for 2 days before meeting my parents back in Split. A much quieter island which seemed to be a destination for couples and families with young kids to come for a vacation rather than the party-goer scene; which suited me just fine. Pretty beaches, beautiful weather, home-cooked meals by a Croatian family, free laundry, an apartment to myself and, at last, a double bed. Everything that I needed to recover from a full-on week and overcome the onset of sickness. The family I was staying with were wonderful, pointing me in the direction of beaches, supermarkets etc on the island and invited me to have a fresh seafood dinner with their extended family of grandparents and kids which I took up in an instant, before collapsing into bed for a deep 12 hour sleep.
The following day I walked to the signature beach of the island, Zlatni Rat, for a day baking in the blistering Croatian sun. As it turns out, the beach is quite famous for its vast array of water sports on the island & with a lot of time to kill & nothing else planned for the day, I decided to give kite surfing around the bay a try, followed by the flying fish & tubing off the back of a speed boat. A good adrenalin kick for the morning and, believe it or not, getting rag-dolled off the back of a boat at such high speeds is kind of exhausting & lead to another early night, after a final home cooked 3 course steak meal by my temporary Croatian family. The next day it was an early ferry, departing the island of Brac, and en route back to Split to await the arrival of my actual family in my mother and father, which I'm super excited about! Better get some cold beers into the fridge because Brett will definitely be stinging for one or four upon arrival.
