First arriving at 3am into Melbourne airport, It was fair to say it was a little colder than what I was used to being in Asia for 9months.. Slightly acclimatised to warmer climates. However it was nice to be able to wear a pair of jeans and trainers and not be dripping in sweat!
So the first things to sort out were bank accounts, tax numbers and accommodation.. Then the hunt for work started. Was a weird feeling to actually go round with cv's in the city and ask for work. I must have handed cv's to about 25 different places.. And applied for another 20 online. Now the only one to actually give me a chance was a little pub in south Melbourne, The George Hotel, and I didn't even hand my cv in, she just asked if I could do a trial shift tomorrow... So I shot off that night and did my RSA licence (responsible service of alcohol) which you have to do to serve alcohol, and naturally they loved me..
The pubs a pretty cool place to work, the staff are down to earth, casual work and we get a free knock off pint at the end of the shift which you usually have with the manager.
It's crazy how much Melbourne is like England.. It just reminds me of living in Nottingham. The old English style of the buildings.. The tram system, and the weather.. What we didn't realise was that May is actually Australia's winter.. Not summer. And the weather just got more crapy as the month went on.. However we still tried to get out and see the city when we weren't doing anything. We went to the street art, which was basically a load of graffiti down one road although it was pretty impressive work!
Luckily one of my friends form Lynn was actually working as a physio for the local rugby union team and tickets behind the front desk for us every weekend, seats right behind the posts, not too shabby! Although I spent most of the games explaining to Jord and the girls what was actually going on..
