You can't come to Kaikoura and not go whale watching, so whale watching is exactly what we did, and what an amazing experience!!
Maybe 10 minutes into the boat ride and we got our first sperm whale. But we took too long getting from the cabin onto the deck and the whale dived heading deep for feeding for the next 60 minutes. Not too worry the next whale was only minutes away and what a sight. You only see maybe a third, if that, of the whale. When trying to spot whales in the ocean you need to look out for the spray of water from the whale spout. This is what you mainly see of the whale until it dives, that's when the fluke comes out of the water. I was lucky to get some awesome photos, but you won't see those on here as they were not taken with my phone but with my camera. The average number of whale sightings per tour is one to two, we where lucky as we got to see four! Not only did we get to see sperm whales but we also saw albatross, seals and dolphins. Fantastic tour, well worth it, a must do if you're ever in Kaikoura.
Now whale watching is exhausting, so I accidentally had a nap. After my
Nap it was dinner time. We had fish n chips, YUM! The seafood in Kaikoura is A++, we had mussel patties which were delicious and hands down the highlight of the meal however the Tarakihi fish was a close second. Great way to end another fantastic day in the beautiful South Island.
Tomorrow is Hokitika, stopping in at Christchurch on the way, looking forward to it!!
