Kya Travels
When we woke up this morning we got all our bags packed up so we wouldn't have to worry about them the next morning, then got ready. We had some leftover pizza for breakfast then got a cab into the Langley bus centre. We found the bus, but couldn't buy a day pass (single fares only), but the driver was super nice and said we could just jump on and buy our daypass when we got into Surrey. So that was nice. As we headed towards Surrey, we had some entertainment by listening to a chatty young girl talking to the driver about all sorts of things, some funny (like how proud she is that she knows how to do lots of different construction jobs, but if anyone sees her work they have to start it again from scratch) and some of them serious (like how people give her dirty looks for sitting in the disabled seating because she looks young and healthy, but because of her epilepsy she needs to sit right at the front of the bus). She definitely wasn't boring, I'll give her that. We arrived at the Surrey skytrain station, bought our daypass and went in to Central Station. We got off and walked over to the sea wall path, but this time on the other peninsula, and went for a walk. We stopped for a coffee, managed to restrain ourselves from going into a craft beer bar and got some photos of some huge bird sculptures, then kept walking. There were lots of cool arty installations along this section of the wall, which was cool, and at the same time it seemed more like the local side as well, with lots of joggers, cyclists and people walking their dogs. We kept walking up until we came to Granville Island, then walked over the bridge to the island. It had lots of streets full of touristy and arty shops, lots of cafes and restaurants and even its own brewery. We stopped in at a shop for a Canada sticker for the guitar case, then gave in to the allure of beer and went to Granville Island Brewing. We got a couple of tastings and chatted with a really nice group; Vancouver locals Dani and Ashley, and Eric from Ontario/Toronto???. We got another round of tastings while talking with them (it was all a bit middle-of-the-road) then left with them to go somewhere better. Eric wanted to stop in first at this little shop full of Wiccan kind of things (he is a Wiccan) which had lots of different things like crystals, jewelery, books, ornaments, that kind of thing. He bought one of those crystals on a necklace that are supposed to answer questions by spinning different ways, then we left and jumped in a couple of taxis. Ashley, Darren and I followed the other two and had a good laugh about Eric's hopeless crush on Dani. Apparently he had 'foretold' that she had an abundance of good coming her way, and the next week her boyfriend had broken up with her for no apparent reason... We joked that it was an abundance of good for him, not her! We arrived at the brewery that Dani and Ashley recommended, 33 Acres, and got some tasting paddles. (There was one called Nirvana, which was the best) We had a good chat and a laugh with the guys there, they were serious fun. After showing a few photos of the Great Ocean Road, I think we convinced them to come to Australia! By the time we left, the girls were literally looking up flight prices! I ordered a growler to take away, which is basically a giant jug of beer, then shortly after, we had to say our goodbyes. Darren and I left and walked up to the skytrain station. We jumped on, only had to go two stops and missed our stop, so we had to jump off and get on a train across the platform to go back a stop! Oops! From there we walked up the street to the apartment of some of Lena's friends where we buzzed to be let in and went upstairs. Lena and Mike were already there, and we met Aaron, Sam and Aarons brother Sean. And of course, Zuko the cute puppy! We shared around our growler of Nirvana and had a chat with everyone. Before long it was games time (it was games night for the guys!) and out came Pokėmon monopoly! I got to be Eevie. We played for a while, were joined by Lena's housemate Tzoalli, and had a bit of fun, but eventually (as tends to happen with monopoly) tensions started running high so we called it quits before anyone started hating each other! We got out a much more friendly game, Cards Against Humanity, which we played while we ate (drank?) some jelly shots that the guys gave out. That was good fun! But after a while we had to start thinking about heading back to Langley, so we started saying our goodbyes. Turns out the others left with us anyway, apart from Sam and Sean, so we went down the elevator and onto the street. We said goodbye to Aaron, who was taking Zuko across to the park, and to Tzoalli, who had her bike with her, then headed to the skytrain with Lena and Mike. We got onto the packed train with them and had a good chat about 'real' music (not realising at the time that we were surrounded by people who had just left a One Direction concert!) then said goodbye to them when they got to their stop. We stayed on until the end of the line, in Surrey, then got off and jumped in a taxi the rest of the way to the hotel, as the buses had finished by that time. When we got back we did a final pack before jumping into bed for a few hours sleep.
