Kya Travels
After a sleep in today, we got up and chilled out on the terrace for a while chatting to some of the hostel workers before heading out. We walked down to the film festival to check out the film times for the day, them went across the road to the Chinese restaurant from yesterday. I got sweet and sour veggies this time, which were good, but not as nice as the eggplant one! While we ate, we used the wifi to apply for our visas to get into Turkey. All I had to do was fill out some information and pay the visa fee ($60US!!) and they emailed the visa straight to us! So easy! When all that was done and we'd finished eating, we went for a walk in a random direction that we hadn't been yet and found ourselves in a market full of clothing stores. We had a bit of a look around and Darren bought some new undies then we headed back to the hostel for jumpers, before we were planning to go back to the film festival. At the hostel, we were talking to one guy that works there, Ady, who was keen to come along to the film with us, so the three of us walked down there and got a seat. The showing was another bunch of short films, all from the Balkan area. A lot of them were actually pretty dark and depressing, and a lot to do with the fall of the Greek economy and the effects its had on its inhabitants, but there were a few funny gems in there to even it out a bit! One video started by showing a scene with an old lady crying, and an old man dead with blood on his shirt in the chair next to her, and a tv was between channels with static and white noise. Then as it started zooming out, you realised he had just fallen asleep and sat on the remote, the 'blood' was salsa from the chips he'd been eating, and the lady was only crying because she was cutting onions! The whole thing lasted probably less than two minutes. Classic. Another favourite was when a shop owner in Greece whose jewellery business is dying gets held up and only has about €5 in the till. The robber then tied him up in the basement and went out to steal things, when a tourist comes in and buys a bracelet for €100. Then the robber cleans the place up and makes a bunch of money from tourists! At the end the owners brother (a policeman) comes in to pick up a ring, eventually finds his brother in the basement then as they were taking the robber out to the police car, the owner sees all the money and tells his brother, "it seems I need an employee more than you need a prisoner." That was a good one too. Very funny. And 'The Pill of Happiness' was another one, based around a reality TV show where people can call in their story and actors play out the scene, getting revenge on a person that has wronged them, such as the cashier that wouldn't change a girls money for a bus ticket, and was rude and wouldn't even check if she had change. In the reality TV version the girl smashes her head into the glass. It was a funny one too. When they were finished, we headed back to the hostel where we met a couple of people who had just checked in; Matt from Australia, and Matt from Canada. (I'll call them Matt.A and Matt.C!) We had a chat with them for a while and had some Tirana beer from the hostels bar, which is a very nice beer. They were keen to grab some food, so after a few beers we headed down to Big Bite and got another beer each and some fast food before heading back to the hostel. We hung around the hostel chatting with the workers and had a conversation about how 80% of the marijuana in all of Europe actually comes from Albania! Crazy! I would have guessed the Netherlands! After a few more beers I called it a night and headed to bed, while Darren stayed to hang out a bit longer.
