Now this is more how we were expecting Belize to be! As planned we took the first boat (water taxi) from Belize City to Caye Caulker, it was easily the smoothest boat ride we've had! On arriving the water was completely still, turquoise and clear and the sky was blue unlike in the city, it looked postcard perfect. Even stepping off the boat we could see lots of fish swimming around, some really long and thin. There are no cars on the island, only golf buggies - we were offered one to get to our hostel but the island is so small it was about 500 meters away so we just walked. Daisy's hostel is one of the cheapest on the island and although very basic it's clean and has everything we need! We met a Korean called Wan who was travelling for 3 years in total and was doing South America by bike!! We dropped off our stuff and went for a walk around the island and immediately loved it. The main streets are lined with Caribbean style restaurants, hostels and shops, the seafront is lined with market stalls under the palm trees offering jewellery, bags, fruit, shrimps etc. We had breakfast at Popeye's, Nathan's favourite breakfast yet - bacon, cheese and potato omelette with toast and tomato salsa. We wandered around asking about various trips and activities to make plans for the next few days. There is a lot on offer and we wanted to do it all! We decided to spend the rest of the day relaxing on Caye Caulker and booked a snorkelling trip to the famous Blue Hole for tomorrow! As Nathan's camera is broken we bought a disposable underwater one, and then also hired an underwater digital camera for the day so we could have pictures at the blue hole. We enjoyed an ice cold drink in the shade of the palm trees by the sea before a delicious lunch in a new restaurant right opposite our hostel. In the afternoon we went to the 'beach' to relax and snorkel -there is no sand so it isn't a beach as such, but there are wooden piers to lay on and you can jump straight into the water from there. It was lovely and warm! After about five minutes in the water I spotted a sting ray about a meter long! I tried to tell Nathan but he was too far away looking at the fish. There were a lot of different coloured and sized fish swimming just below the pier, our favourite being a small bright blue one. There's a bar right on the pier which has really cheap drinks so we had a couple there until it was starting to get dark. Kat was really confident snorkelling, practising for the big day tomorrow!
For dinner we went to Roses restaurant which had a grill outside with fresh lobster and fish. Nathan had a BZ$30 lobster and I had a fish kebab, both came with roasted garlic potatoes and broccoli rice. It was one of the nicest meals so far, absolutely delicious! We wandered back to the hostel afterwards and the restaurant opposite that we went to earlier was heaving with people so we enjoyed the atmosphere from our balcony!
