Only a little time for a very brief update. We're in San Diego at a Starbucks borrowing the free wifi. Humid and sunny here today, so the a/c of Starbucks is welcoming...for some of us. San Diego looks easy to get around in. Port is across the street from the main Santa Fe line train station, and the airport is visible, roughly a ten minute drive I'd say. Public transit trolly also beside the train station. They look red and shiny and new.
Cruise from Victoria was pretty smooth. Felt the ship start to rock as soon as we cleared Vancouver Island into the open Pacific Ocean, with a 19 knot wind hitting the back corner of the ship. Stacey and I felt it right away. Ugh. Not used to that. All we wanted to do was sleep, so we did. But even at that, there wasn't much in the way of waves. It looked pretty calm out there, it was just the wind hitting the big ship.
After that first night, the ship and wind both turned south, and the motion of the ocean was much more favorable to our inner ears. Ocean stayed amazingly calm and the ship was much more stable, and this lasted the entire way to San Diego. The Ships Captain, Captain Guus, who we met, said it was the smoothest repositioning cruise that they had had, and the wind at our stern meant we made great time, and I'm assuming good fuel savings.
Now, the bad news. We're heading towards some rough weather. Tropical Storm Odile is directly below us and is expected to turn into a hurricane with 105 mile per hour winds. As of last night no one knew what exactly that meant. We managed to speak to the Captain again this morning while he was making his rounds and he had a 3am wake up for a 4am phone call with head office to discuss the situation.
The options were to stay in San Diego, try to hug the coast, or go out deeper into the ocean and try to go around it. He explained, if we stay in San Diego to wait the storm out, we could be waiting a week for the ocean to stop churning and that doesn't work for the travellers, getting delayed that much. Especially for people catching flights and hotels at the end of the cruise. Hugging the coast is too close to the storm, so it looks as though we will be skirting the outer edge of the storm into the Pacific. Sadly, that means that we will most likely be missing Cabo San Lucas on Sunday and Puerto Vallarta on Monday, since the storm will be in between there. So we will either have more sea days or they will try to add another port stop somewhere past the storm. I'm hoping for Costa Rica or Panama, but we'll let-cha know.
We have more blog and pictures to add from the trip from Victoria to San Diego, but we are running out of time. Gonna try to see the Midway Museum next to the ship, and it took longer than expected to get off the ship. US Customs was going very slowly today, doing a full inspection. Heard a few complaints, mostly from one older couple behind us. Very impatient. What can you do??
Hope to get time to post more soon. We're doing great so far!
