It took us a little longer than expected to get to Hoi An, but we made it, and had a lovely two days here. Hoi An is a smaller town on the coast, famous for its tailor shops. The shops are at least eighty percent tailors here! We had dresses made for us. It's crazy how fast they can sew and make alterations here!
Hoi An is also a city of lanterns. Every night, the streets in the old part of town are turned into walking streets and all the shops are decorated with lanterns of all colours and designs. There are shops on the both sides of the river, with a beautifully lit bridge connecting the two sides, making for a very enjoyable evening stroll.
We stayed in another guesthouse, or homestay as they call it here. They let us use their bikes so we could explore the town easily. Maneuvering around all the cars, motorbikes, and buses required a little more concentration and teamwork than biking normally does, but it was so much better than walking in the heat.
We biked to the beach one afternoon. Vietnam has beautiful white sand beaches, and the water was a little colder and more refreshing than in Thailand.
Hoi An has a teahouse that we visited which is a fair trade shop run by hearing and speech impaired Vietnamese adults. We had to communicate with them using blocks with written messages. We also visited their craft workshop, where other disabled adults make souvenirs. We thought it was a very cool initiative!
We are just waiting to board our flight to Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam. Talk soon.
