Our last four days in Cambodia were spent in Siem Reap, a smaller city whose main attraction is the temples of Angkor. The city itself is set up with a large walking district including numerous markets. It is definitely getting into the rainy season here, with a bit of rain each day, but we are really appreciating the relatively cooler weather!
We hired a tuk-tuk driver to explore the temples for two days. There are so many different temples, all built of big sandstone blocks in the eleventh to thirteenth centuries. These temples are very well preserved, and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. They were mostly built as Hindu temples but later converted to Buddhist ones. We explored some of the smaller ones, leading up to the famous Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world. We had an early 4:30am wake up call on Kristin's birthday to watch the sun rise beautifully over Angkor Wat! Not a bad start for her 21st birthday. The temples were all an outstanding sight, and a great opportunity to learn about some more of Cambodia's history.
We may have indulged in a few $4 foot massages here, but they really were well deserved after all the climbing and walking we did at Angkor!
Sadly, that brings us to the end of our new destinations! Tomorrow we are headed to Bangkok again for two days before heading home. Stay tuned for one more post!
