The day started out returning the bikes to the rental shop. While one bike was moved across the street from its initial location (slight panic), all 4 were there in the morning - whew! After that, we packed up, checked out, and we were off to the ferry terminal on the west coast where we would catch the boat that would take us over to the UK.
This required a walk to a tram to a bus to another bus and then another walk. As you can imagine, we had to ask locals for help... (Again??!?) But overall, it was a pretty successful journey (maybe I should dust off that Amazing Race application after all?!)
As we walked up to the ferry, we were pleased to see it was more like a decent sized cruise ship than a ferry (and, of course, broke into the Love Boat theme song on the way as we finished our walk).
The ship was really nice and our cabin was better than expected (expected 4 single wall pull out beds in a tiny room with one window, but this had 2 pull out singles and one double bed on the ground and 2 windows - somewhat spacious!?). We checked it out, dropped our packs and headed for the rooftop deck to enjoy the sunny afternoon as we headed out to sea.
I have heard many stories about the North Sea crossing and how incredibly rough it can be. I'm thinking this is true, as I am noticing a very large amount of "air sickness" bags stocked in sleeves on the walls of each hallway.
However, so far, the water was really flat with very little movement of the boat. We enjoyed a pizza dinner at the Italian restaurant (one of 5 restaurants/bars on board), stopped by the "casino" (which was just a small handful of slot machines in a row and a locked area with 1 blackjack and 1 roulette table), listened to the lounge singer while we played some cards, and headed to bed early.
We're getting excited - UK and beginning of Hadrian's wall starting tomorrow morning!
