Hello! So, by popular demand (ha) I'm trying my first blog... we'll see how this goes ;) Not sure what my connectivity will be along the way, but will try to keep in touch. If not during the trip, I will update the blog when I get home.
Here is my first post:
The Camino calls..... can't believe it's only 6 days until I fly out for my adventure!
I fly out of Chicago on 8/31 to my first stop - Porto, Portugal (arriving on 9/1). I will be walking the Portuguese Way (there are many paths on the Camino), heading north through Portugal into Spain to Santiago de Compestela. I will also be adding on the path from Santiago de Compestela up to Finisterre ("the end of the world" - Columbus), then to Muxia and back to Santiago before flying home.
The plan is to cover over 200 miles on foot in ~23 days (well, that's the PLAN anyway!!). All I really know at this point is that I fly into Porto, and out of Santiago 24 days later. What happens in between is a complete unknown. I'll be carrying everything I need on my back, and staying in "Auberges" (group hostels) along the way, and washing my laundry in fountains (so I hear). I know, not my normal laying on the beach with a drink in my hand kind of vacation.... but I am drawn to go on this journey (not sure why yet... but... I'm going!)
Thank you for all of your well wishes. They really mean a lot to me. Oh, and a special shout out to David H who sent me a translation of "I would like a beer, please" in Portuguese! :)

p.s. For those of you who are saying, what the heck is "the Camino"?! (which is the usual reaction as well as mine a few months ago) - Here is some good stuff:
- Watch the movie THE WAY (2010 - available on Netflix - Emilio Estevez directs/acts and Martin Sheen stars) - good movie, and it will give an idea of the Camino experience (the French route)
- Check out: http://www.portugueseway.com/ While this is a company/tour (I'll be walking on my own), I found it today and it looks to have a good overview of the path I will be taking under "portuguese way / camino highlights"
- Google "the camino de santiago", "the way of st james", or "the portuguese way"
