So, technology has not been my friend the last few days. I typed out a whole entry about our day in Oxford on Friday, but then somehow it didn't get saved. Very frustrating. And I was way to tired and annoyed to want to type it out again. To summarize, Oxford is amazing and I want to live here. It's so old and academic-feeling. It kind of made me wish I'd gone to a real college. Highlights included the Eagle & Child, the pub where CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien used to hang out; Christ Church College, where they filmed some of Harry Potter; and the Grand Cafe, the oldest coffee shop on Britain.
Saturday morning we left bright and early for our 35 mile bike ride to Cirencester. The weather started off ok, but by the afternoon it was extremely windy and rainy. There were times it felt like the wind was trying to push us back up the hill we were trying to Nike down. We did stop for tea in the cute little village of Bibury. It was absolutely adorable and completely what I'd expected of a town in the Cotswolds. We got to Cirencester extremely sore and tired. There were points when I didn't think I could do the same thing again the next day.
But in true navy form, we biked the whole way to Bath on Sunday. It was so much easier. The weather was great and the hills weren't as bad. We saw more cute little villages and lots of beautiful rolling hills. I was still thoroughly exhausted when we got to Bath. It was around 70 miles in 2 days. We had two flat tires along the way, met a very nice man at the Malmesbury Abbey who assured us that our biking clothes were not too underdressed to go in the church, and petted every farm animal that came close enough to the fence.
The funniest thing was when we got to the hostel in Bath. When the girls were in charge in Cirencester, we found a comfy little B&B. When Spencer was in charge for Bath, he found a hostel at a bar. Not a hostel with a bar, a bar with a hostel. It was pretty hilarious.
Monday we spent touring Bath. It was wonderful. We toured the abbey, the Jane Austen Center, and of course the Roman Baths. It's such a beautiful city, completely different from Oxford, but still really nice. Bath felt like it was straight out of a Jane Austen novel. I definitely appreciate her stories more now. Then we headed back to Oxford for the night. All the pubs closed at 11, so it kind of killed the party for Tina's last night, but I was pretty tired so I didn't care.
