I accomplished two short hikes today in Joshua Tree. One was the Barker Dam and the other was Wall Street Mill. Nice hikes, but I chose a bad weekend. The park is completely full of people since every national park is free on Martin Luther King weekend... They stumped me because I paid anyways for an entire week. Anyways it was just too crowded for me so I ventured south right at sunset. I am now at 6500 ft and it is snowing in the San Bernardino National Forest. By the time I got half way up the mountain it was dark and there was no turning back. I kept having these mental Hollywood images run through my head of my "cube car rental" rolling off the side of the mountain with all of the ice. I made it safe and sound only to realize Idyllwild is no longer a hippy commune, but now it is a price gouging mountain town. My fee for camping in my car (it's 29 degrees F out here and it is snowing... I'm not pitching my tent) was 39 bucks. So basically I bought a parking space in mild snow with a shower and an electrical hookup which I am taking full advantage of now. The plan for tomorrow is to find a cheaper place to stay and hike some trails once I buy a map. It's crazy to me how only 1 hour ago I was in a cactus area and now I'm covered in pine trees. God I love California.
