Another great day in Hobart! After an early rise we checked out a few local coffee joints and made our plan for the day. We struck out across town to explore some of the local scenery as lots of things were closed or not operating for the Easter holiday.
Our first stop was intended to be a historical site that used to be a penitentiary for women. Unfortunately, we were mislead by the website and it was actually closed - whoops!
So we continued on to check out the botanical gardens. It was a bit of a walk, but most of it was through a nice big park called the Queen's Domain. Most of it was along a trail called the soldier walk where they had planted a tree for every Tasmanian soldier who died in World War One.
At the Botanical Gardens we wandered around and explored the different areas. There are some pretty cool plants here that I'm not used to seeing because of the warmer climate. I love the look of the big gum trees and the colourful birds - still watching for my first kookaburra! We also stopped down beside the water to have a snack and take in the views.
After our exploring we headed back across the Queen's Domain. It was a bit of a climb across some trails but we cross over by some cool sports fields and caught an awesome view of Mount Wellington above North Hobart.
On top of the hill, we even met an overly friendly local in a car who asked us all about our travels. Afterwards, we climbed down into North Hobart and found a pub that was open so we could grab a beer and watch some of the footy game being played in Melbourne. None of us fully understand the game - but it's the experience that counts. :)
After a power nap and a shower, we grabbed some dinner at a little Japanese restaurant and then headed back to the hostel pub to plan the rest of our trip. We booked a car and tagged all of the interesting places on a map along the east coast as well as all of the free camping sites along the way. Now all the have to do it get there! There was a guy running trivia who was super helpful and gave us lots of insights about what to check out on the road.
Tomorrow will be an exciting day: we get the car, we will stock up on supplies, and then we will head east to start our Tassie road trip! We are all super excited!
Watch for pics, snaps, and other updates - it's sure to be an interesting adventure! Stay weird party people, hope you are all stuffed full of chocolate and Easter dinners!
