Stef's Sarah's, and Lauren's European Adventure!
Sorry I haven't written in a couple of days! Computer access has been minimal. The rest of our time in Venice was incredible. I am DEFINITELY going back there one day. I was so sad that we only had one day there! We decided spontaneously to go to Verona yesterday instead of Padua, and since we hadn't even booked a hostel, we were able to go where the wind took us! When we got into the train station there, we looked up the names of hostels and chose the cheapest one (14 euros including breakfast!) and headed on over there. Verona is such a nice little town. The red roofed houses and buildings just span right over the hilltops... very small town Italy! The hostel was pretty far from the city center, so we took a bus as far as it would take us, then lugged our bags (or in our case, rolled... we kind of cheat with the backpacks on wheels...) up very steep hills and finally found the hostel. It was absolutely adorable. It was old looking with a black metal gate in the entryway, and when you walked through the gate there was a little courtyard with bedsheets hanging on clotheslines swaying with the breeze... it was completely quiet and all you could hear were the birds chirping. It was so nice! After leaving our bags, we went down into the city center and saw the arena, the Castelvecchio, and the balcony where Romeo climbed to see Juliet (except that they were not real people, so really it was a total tourist trap...). We sat in the main piazza and drank wine and people watched, and listened to jazz music from a concert that was taking place. Very nice! We had to be back at the hostel by 12 (curfew!) and we got back at about 11:15 and started to get ready for bed, and then at 12 exactly the lights turned off! When they say lights out at midnight, they really mean it! Fortunately, I had my handy dandy travel flashlight (see dad, it came in handy!) and i could finish getting ready for bed! We left Verona this morning and are now in Florence....in a Hilton!!!!!!! For Lauren's birthday present her sister reserved her two nights here... it's SOOOO nice to be in a hotel! Where we don't have to lock up our bags! And we have our own bathroom! And don't have to wear shower shoes!!! We haven't done any sightseeing today because we spent most of the morning bouncing between trains, but we went for a really nice dinner and the waiters could NOT get enough of us! These Italian men just don't leave us alone!! I had shrimp scampi, and the shrimps were still whole, eyes and all... and a tuscan style steak. We got gelato for dessert, of course! Alright, well i am off to go sleep in my nice clean Hilton bed, where i don't have to use my travel sheets to separate me from other people's grossness. Man am i spoiled! haha... love you guys!!!
xoxo
