Wow wow wow fiji is amazing!
Was met off the plane by a band singing the Bula (welcome song) - grass skirts and all! Then transfered to my first hostel in Nadi for the night. Hostel was lovely, there was a beautiful sunset just as i arrived and the food was amazing. Had a distastrous attempy at climbing onto a hammock and fell off - twice! in front of everyone and grazing all my arm. Tried a different one with much more success though. Met a nice group of folk on the first night, two of whom had been completely ripped off by another hostel who they had paid $1400 each to book boats and hostels on an island trip. When they arrived, the hostels didn't exist! When they got back to the mainland, the people who ahd ripped them off had disappeard and the hostel closed down. Nightmare. They ahd the police onto it though and were waiting around to see what was going to happen.
The next morning I was picked up nice and early to go to the harbour to travel over to Octopus. The boat was pretty bumpy ie actually painfully so. The seats were not padded and we were constantly flying off them. Anyhow when we arrived it was so worth it. I ahve never seen such a beautiful place in my life. The sea was numerous shades of blue and the sand was white and the local village people were standing on the beach singing us the Bula song. We arrived just in time for lunch, an amazing assortment of barbequed meats and fish, salads, breads etc it was delish. Also, despite being in a alrge dorm (14) it had some really personal touches like flowers on the bed and in the bathroom. Had an amazing 5 days here and emt a nice group of folk to hang around with. We did a hilarious (if we do say so ourselves) Baywatch sketch at the quiz night and got laods of bonus points because the owner said it was the funniest thing he had ever seen. Oh and we won some chamoagne pina coladas for it oo - amazing!
Got myself a massage one day - not realising they did it in the dorm for everyone to see but luckily most people were out sunbathing or snorjelling so only a few popped in. The woman who did it was really hilarious. Her friend (The Boss she called her) came in at first too and they caught up on the gossip while she gave me my massage which was hilarious because she was obviusly getting excited at one point and started pummelling my back really hard until she finised that bit of the story and slowed down again. She was amazed by my eyes. She said she had only ever seen two people before with blue eyes and she was able to tell me what room they were in etc etc she remembered them so well. she just keot saying 'wooooooooooooooooow woooooooooooooooooooow woooooooooooooooooooow' it was hilarious. I think i accidentally told her that ittook 5 days to get to Fiji from Scotland though because I misunderstood her. Oooops!
I'd love to say I did all the activities they had on offer at the resort from fishing to jewelerry making, fromdiving to hiking to Bula dance classes and how to tie your sarong in50 different ways but I'm afraid I was very lazy and after the initial day of stressing that i couldn't check my emails and writing a million to do lists i just chilled out completely. theonly vaguely energetic things i did were a bit of snorkelling and a trip to the village which was really interesting. The resort is techincally a part of the village and some of the money made from the resort goes back to the village, not just through the hiring of local people but also profits from trips etc. And we were also able to give a donation that would bhe matched by the resort and goes towards a scholarship fund for the children enabling them to finish school and, if they want to, even to go uni.
Island life was certainly a big change. All there was on the island were 3 villages. No roads so everywhere had to be reached by boat or by foot over some massive hills. For groceries, school, post office, medical help you needed to travel to the mainland - 1 and a half hours on the fast boat. It was lovely to be so secluded and away from it all.
The last night was Meke night where the local people put on a show for us of dancing and singing. It was amazing and I'm gutted none of my pictures came out because it was dark. We also had a big traditional fijian feast. The food at that place was honestly amazing. Foodwise it was all inclusive and it was all amazing. everyone raved about it all week!
I had one night on the mainland before i left (due to boat/plane times) so I headed back to Nadi and luckily enough it was also Meke night at that resort too so i had it 2 nights in a row! Amazing. This time they had fire dancing and dances from all the south pacific islands which was really cool. I had planned to spend the next morning exploring Nadi only to find that everything was closed due to it being a sunday. Ah well, no worries. I just lay on a hammock instead.
