The train ride through the majestic Alps from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland was amazing! The train tracks winded along the narrow cliffs of the mountains, providing the perfect view of the valley below. We arrived in Zermatt on Thursday, allowing a three night, two day stay in the Swiss town known primarily for the Matterhorn. Narrow alleys lined with old chalets and plenty of stores make up the center of the town, accessible only by foot or electric taxi; cars are banned from the city center. The Swiss Alps surround all sides of the touristy town.
Yesterday after watching the snow fall in the morning, Steph and I wandered the streets in the direction of the Matterhorn, stopping in shops along the way. We soon found ourselves on the outskirts of town hiking up a graveled path giving way to beautiful views of the town. We passed seemingly abandoned chalets and small flocks of sheep, the bells around their necks clinking as they walked. About an hour later we arrived at a restaurant where we enjoyed a bowl of vegetable soup "mit" sausage, then turned around for the downhill walk back to our hotel.
A constant cloud hovered over the Matterhorn for the length of our stay, but we woke to find a clear blue sky on our last morning in Zermatt. Since we had an 8:30 AM train to catch to Florence, Italy, we were up early enough to see the morning sunlight on the snowcapped mountain. It was quite the site!
