Greetings from the South Island!
It's Friday 22nd August, 9am, and I'm off whale watching in a little while. I'm gonna recap quickly on the last few days, sorry if it's boring, but I can't be bothered to jazz it up.
So, the flight was pretty crap. It started off alright, and the movies were fab, but it turned out we stopped in Dubai for a couple of hours and then in Singapopre AND Brisbane, and it all turned out to be a big faff.
Basically New Zealand consists of two islands - the North and South. Duh. I landed in Auckland (the capital... I think) in the North Island on Monday afternoon and then got a plane down to Christchurch in the South Island. It was BLOODY FREEZING. When I got to my hotel room I welled up with tears of joy just at the sight of my bed. Seriously, travelling to New Zealand is A MAJOR MISSION. DO IT AT YOUR PERIL. Now it's all worth it though.
So, Tuesday morning I woke up at half 5 and got a plane to Queenstown, which is further south, where my friends were going to meet me. I wish you could have seen the plane. It was tiny. The scenery was spectacular but omg if there had been any plane problems, I would have been a goner - we were flying in between massive snowy moutains. Mum would have had a right cow if she'd seen it!
I landed safely though, and met my friends. Apparently it was - 4 degrees, so I dressed up in 4 layers and a ski jacket and a wooly hat, but my friends came in hoodies and jeans and thought I looked like a right wally. That day we drove to Franz Josef, one of the two glacier 'townships' - that's right, not a town, not a city, not a village - a townSHIP. Franz Josef consisted of a street. Or maybe even two streets at a push. It was tiny as. There was a bookshop, a mobil petrol station and a cafe and a 'local favourite' bar, although being a local favourite probably means the whole population of 12 think it's cool. haha.
Anywho, we booked in to do a full day glacier hike the next day, which I was cacking my pants about because I am pretty unfit - I get tired running down the road! Also, coz of my poorly chest, but I still thought I would try it. I'm gonna try to find you some glacier history or info so you get what it is all about and put it in next time. I'm gonna go hunt down some whales now. Jeev just said to me 'omg I would NEVER EVER do that, don't you know whales will like, totally capsize your boat?!' Thanks. So, maybe I won't be back to finish off my little story. If so, I love you all. Peace. ;)
