We soon realized that the government curfew of 11pm was strictly enforced after we arrived in Vang Vieng after 11pm hoping to find a room. We trekked over a toll bridge and around hotels trying to find somewhere open but nowhere, finally stumbled upon an up market resort type place with a great room by the river at $20 a night it was pretty steep but it was Chris' birthday so so be it. We woke up in the morning and saw just how beautiful the landscape around here was. Limstone karsts dotted around the mountains and the fast flowing river running through the small town.
We decided to go tubing like everyone else does, hired our tube and were dropped off 4km up the river. It was great fun, floating down a tube we encountered season Kho Saners partying away at the make shift clubs blaring techno, that were built along the river pulling in tubers to stop for a beer and a rope swing over the river. We stopped for a few hours and some Beerlao watching the tubers drift past, it was so relaxing, and yet unlike the Lao we have been seeing. Once we were out of Lao Kip we continued to float down the river until we floated conveniently past our hotel and swam ashore.
Vang Vieng is a typical Banana Pancake Trail stop although less famous than the likes of Bali, Ko Panghan, Phuket, Kho San road, Koa Samui it still attracts the same crowd.. However Vang Vieng can't really rival its Thai counterparts due to the curfew so the whole town is just packed with bars with lay down type chairs faced to a few TVs mounted on the wall...and ALL showing Friends re-runs!!! Its ridiculous, when people aren't tubing, kayaking or swinging from trees drinking beerlao they're watching friends reruns getting high, and then everyone goes to sleep at 12 pm, its like the place where everyone goes to chill out from partying before they get down to Bangkok again. We only spent 2 days here and was a nice place to spend Chris' birthday and finished our trip with Lao Lao shakes and a nice Lao massage...one hour for $4! Must be the cheapest place in the world to get a massage.
