Highlights of week 2 in Ejura:
- Kumasi market – the most narrow rows of stalls swarming with people carrying things (on their head of course) that ranged from kitchen scourers to raw meat (with flies also enjoying the ride). Practiced my bargaining skills buying more material for clothes which will obviously fit in my already stuffed bag...
- The taxi driver on the way back from trip to Mampong “When I am born, I will call my son Rachel.” Would have been quite flattering if I had been better able to convince him that it may suit his daughter more... but I did like the bit about being born.!
- Had ice cream bought for myself and Noa when a man in Kumasi was impressed with me ‘trying’ to carry a box of teaching materials on my head. What does he mean trying? I thought I was doing quite well despite not having mastered the no hands technique...
- Going out with the volunteers and the boys to the raging 'bar' in Ejura where I went wild and had a fanta... the music was really cool so hoping to find the same CD here in Kumasi.
Yesterday was my last day at the school in Ejura as for a few different reasons I decided to leave the project. Mainly because I feel that the school has had so many volunteers for many years now that what we do is not as helpful as it no doubt was to begin with. I believe that the best way for the school to move forward and continue to improve would be for one or two qualified and experienced teachers to go to Ejura and share their knowledge with the local teachers. I left on a good note with both the director of the project and the headmaster of the school and with a lot of good memories despite the short time spent here.
The next step is to look into another few projects here in Ghana before deciding on my next plan. In the meantime I am going to the Coast with Barbara to see the castles, the national park with very high rope walkway (eek!) and go SWIMMING! Wahoo the sea at last!
