Hello Africa!
Arrived in Ghana mid afternoon, 3 hours later than scheduled arrival and had my first encounter with 'african time'. Very laid back!! My bag got lost on way here so lined up for another few hours to fill out various forms describing contents, very useful seeing as my bag was locked!
Picked up by Gunadiish, volunteer coordinator for 2 projects here in Accra, and went on a crazy taxi ride through the capital city ~ quite an adrenaline rush!! With bruised butt bones and no bag, in the same clothes i left Auckland in I settled in to the Principal of Golden Era Primary Schools' house. Him and his wife are the loveliest people, gave me a towel, soap etc and doing so with beautiful smiles typical of people here in Ghana.
Today I went to Golden Era school and was introduced to the entire school and staff members. Had a great time sitting in class learning some history of ghana with the intermediates, dancing in front of the kindergarton classes which drew the attention of half the school who then stood at the door peering in on the "funny white lady" who Im pretty sure was a shocking dancer!
The kids here are beautiful. Can not even begin to describe them! Again, even though some are so shy of foreigners, smiling at them always ends in a smile back and gorgeous smiles they are! Kwame, a boy about 5 at the house where Im staying, was so exited to see me that his mum informed me he never ever sits in the back of the car but he did today because he "wanted to sit next to the white lady".
Off to Ejura tomorrow, another adventure although this time I plan on sitting my bag on my lap...
