Country number 13... Austria. Home to Mozart, Strauss, apfelstrudel (apple strudel), Wiener schnitzel, Lipizzaner horses, Vienna Boy's choir and most importantly the Sound of Music... (to anyone who hasn't seen the movie at least 5 times - you are officially a disgrace!).
So from Prague I took the bus down to Cesky Krumlov, a super cute little town that is bound to be 'the' next place to be for backpackers (if it isnt already). I checked into a gorgeous little hostel that had a dorm type room up some old wooden (and unstable) stairs. Facing over the river the hostel had a really chilled out and homelly feel to it, a nice change from the weird bootique type 'hostel' that I stayed in in Prague.
Most people there chose to spend the day on the river where you could kayak or raft. But feeling poor and not too tempted by the feebleness of the 'rapids' (not even grade one I tell you!) I decided to just wander the streets (in a non prostitute sense).
Taking a shuttle service plus a train I ended up in Vienna. The countryside on the way from Linz to Vienna was gorgeous, somehow just what I thought Austria would look like! Chatting to an Austrian teacher on the train was a welcoming start to the country. Highlight of the day - I used my sense of direction to find my hostel as the map was confusing me and I WAS RIGHT!!! Definately impressive for someone who inherited a shocking lack of skills in this area...
Basically I actually came to Austria as I wanted to go to Salzburg which I am not even going to pretend wasn't because the sound of music was set there... (a tad embarassing I know). But I have run out of time and am all sorted to be on the night train back to lovely Cologne tomorrow so just spent my time here in Vienna. Trying to be semi posh I went to find out if I could go to a show type thing that they have so many of. Unfortunately the only ones in my price range were for standing tickets and being lazy I decided to pass...
The hostel I'm in at the moment is awesome because...
- No one in my room snores or night hoicks (all girls - maybe a trend there)
- There is a super well equipped kitchen (I have whipped up some pretty impressive meals for a humble backpacker)
- There is a music room - in the evening people pick up the guitars and start playing or other play the piano (not me as its really loud and I forgot how to play)
- Book swap - proper books, not just the ripped up crap they have in some places.
- A shower with pressure!
- A nearby fruit stall with the nicest raspberries ever (apart grannys house in england)
- A sunny courtyard for me to work on my non existant tan
- A comfy common area where its easy to meet people for a chat and a laugh
I think I could open my own one being such an expert now...
