Up at 6.30, breakfast at 7am, and work began at 8am with the fantastic task of......(drumroll please)......shovelling s***!
We grabbed shovels and headed to the elephants sleeping areas. We scooped out the poo and loaded it into the truck. As rank as this job was, we all had a great laugh together. This didn't mean we weren't glad this job was over though....
After a Thai lunch, we went to the dog shelter to clean out the pools. After a whole hour of chucking water out of the pool using buckets, someone discovered the drain. Sigh.
Another water fight broke out, we threw frogs at each other, and played with the dogs before it started to rain and we headed back.
In the evening, we had a talk with Lek, the founder of the park and total hero. She is the granddaughter of a shaman, and grew up with elephants, and witnessed the cruel torture that they endure to be domesticated and put in captivity. She then began to rescue the elephants, and bring them back to health. Many of the elephants were victims of the illegal logging industry long the thai-Burmese border, some were performing elephants, whilst others were injured in land mine accidents.
She also discussed the dogs, and how she rescued many from the Bangkok floods in 2011, from road accidents, abandonment, and from the dog meat trade industry.
She has been in prison, battled with the community and it's leaders, but still persevered with her passion for animals. She thanked us for giving up our time and money, and we were inspired.
In the evening, we got some cheap Thai whiskey and rum, and played drinking games (see photo). Though told to be quiet multiple times, we bonded over stupid games, chats, taking the mick out of Steven Hawking.
