New York. My first time here, everybody told me I would love it, the city that never sleeps. Lots of expectations, but also not really sure what to expect. I have been to lots of American cities, they are all the same, tall buildings, polluted, not very attractive.
After a long trip from Hawaii to New York, with 2 stopovers, and all 3 flights delayed, I arrived in New York Thursday evening. I was nervous I wouldn't find Ingrid in Newark airport, as my phone is not working here, and as I was late. But when I finally found my luggage, which arrived hours before me, I went to McDonalds and found Ingrid sitting there. We were both tired and got a shuttle to our hotel, and went to sleep. Surprisingly, none of us had any jetlag, I guess arriving at night is the way to go.
Well rested, we went out exploring on Friday. We had no clue where we were going, but we started walking, and eneded up 60 blocks south, on Times Square. New York is cold, bitterly cold, it is so windy here. When coming from Hawaii that can be a tad depressing! We just walked around, taking it all in. New York is big, it is busy and you need time to embrace all the impressions. We also walked all the way back to the hotel in the evening, and walked 120 blocks all together in one day, now that is a good workout!
Saturday we also walked, but the other way. We walked up north to Harlem, the black neighbourhood of New York. Still just walking around , peoplewatching. In the afternoon we took a walk through Central Park, the plan was originally not to walk through the whole park, but we somehow got lost and ended up in the other end!! It is a very big park! It was nice getting out of the city and getting some "fresh" air again. If I lived here, I would definetely take a lot of walks in this park.
Monday we had booked a "Sex & the city" tour, and were very excited about it! It was a 3 and a half hour tour around the city to lots of locations used in the series and the movies. It was cool to recognize places we had seen on tv, and it is so funny how everyhting looks so normal in real life. New York really isn't that glamourous, it is just an American city. On the tour we also tasted some cupcakes, which in true American style, had way too much frosting, which made me want to throw up after I'd eaten it! We also had a Cosmopolitan drink, of course! In the evening we went up Empire State Building, and caught the sun setting from the tallest building in New York. Only then, did we realize how massive this city really is! The view was beautiful, if only it hadn't been so incredibly cold! It was also Halloween,a nd we saw lots of people dressed up, and there was a parade somewhere downtown, but as it was so incredibly cold, we did not want to stand outside for many hours, so sadly we missed it.
Monday morning we jumped on a bus to Washington, which I will write about in my next post! La-tee-da!
