Short power boat ride around SW of island to Hakaui Bay with our guide Jean Pierre ( a native Marquesan of the Typee tribe ) to start our 6 KM hike to Hakaui waterfall - the tallest in the S. Pacific. Beginning at "Survivor Marquesas Beach" ( Kim in her reef shoes, having left her fancy new "Powerdrain" shoes in Texas), we traversed around a beautiful bay to trail on private property, guarded by goat, cow & horse skulls. Through dirt avenues on small banana, coconut, mango, papaya, & lime groves, into dense rain forest with too many varieties of tropical trees to remember. Back & forth across stream fed by waterfall. Past Maraes (Polynesian ruins dating to 1000 AD), & ultimately to the relatively unspectacular falls, in an otherwise beautiful setting.
Swim at "Survivor Beach". Baby Reef sharks & Manta rays in water 10 ft off beach.
