Natalie, Sunna, Jonina and I left San Carlos after a couple of days and headed to the big smoke of Panama City! Natalie had already spent a few days in Panama City previously, and she had been couch surfing, so she called the guy up that she had been staying with and he let all 4 of us spend a night at his (very small) apartment. He is actually Portuguese, but is currently living in Panama City. Our 1st afternoon, before heading to Hugo´s apartment was spent in the shopping mall! It was so strange being back in a city...to be honest I really did not enjoy it...I was already missing being out in the country away from shops and millions of people rushing about! It kind of made me a little bit sad to think I would be heading home soon....back to city life!
We had a quiet night at Hugo´s and then the next day Sunna, Jonina and I booked into a hostel in town. Again we spent the day in a shopping mall and then went to see a movie (that was a 1st for 5 months). Later that night, after dinner, we went out for a few beers. An Aussie guy, Greg, that we met at the hostel came along. We were going o try find Calle Uruguay which is meant to be the road with all the clubs, but we could not find it and instead ended up at what turned out to be a very strange bar...in fact we think it was maybe a w**** house ...there were lots of older white men hanging around and women in very short skirts and inappropriate clothing loitering around them.
On Friday we headed off to see the Panama Canal. Luckily we got there just in time to see the last ship of the morning going through...pretty impressive really. The museum was also really interesting. Now I can say I have seen both the Suez and Panama Canals!
Friday night we met up with Natalie, Hugo and a whole bunch of other couch surfers for dinner and drinks. Later on we went to a really cool club in the old part of town, Casco Viejo. It was pretty funny as they had a band playing covers of Depache Mode for the first while....although I admit I wanted to dance but no one else was. It was good that the club had quite a few westerns there, but of course we were still hassled but the locals! Funnily enough...I bumped into Toby there...the German guy I shared a room with in Honduras in the Bay Islands. All in all it was a great night!
Saturday myself and the two Icelandic girls went to Casco Viejo again (the old part of town) and wondered the streets...it is absolutely beautiful! We went to see the theatre, and ended up buying tickets to a local ballet concert....mostly children's ballet. It was very sweet and funny! Of course the little kids were totally unco-ordinated and all over the place, which made it that much more entertaining.
Saturday night ended up being a quiet one after a big Friday night, and Sunday was a lazy day in the hostel....in anticipation of going to the San Blas Islands. I am also trying to find a boat sailing to Columbia in about 2 weeks time....there are a few options in the pipeline, but I am worried about getting seasick...would not be anything worse than being stuck on a boat for 5 days feeling like s***!
