Well things are looking up...! I had a very funny weekend...Went out Friday and Saturday night with some of the other students from the school to a few bars and clubs (if you can call them that) and a very strange after party...When all the bars close at about 1am there are after parties around town....the one I went to on Friday night appeared to be someones backyard with a makeshift toilet in the middle of the lawn and serving very bad vodka and hotdogs. The bars and clubs are a great mixture of locals and international students...with very cheap drinks. The locals are not shy...and it is not the best being blonde in this country. I had a few guys come up to chat to me, despite the fact that I was with other guys (students) and try make small talk...or whatever. I dont think the one guy realised that telling me he liked my platinum hair was not a compliment from my perspective! It was very entertaining going out with a mixture of international students...including a german who was very odd and took his iPod with him on a night out in the town and a Korean who can speak about 2 words of English and the between the lot of us we can only say bout 2 words in Spanish....so interesting conversations all around! The locals can dance....that is for sure...I will definitely avoided the dance floor until I have some salsa lessons...even then it would be embarrassing.
The Spanish is coming along slowing...it can be quite frustrating at times...it took me about an hour today to try figure out what the hell reflexive verbs are...it is a long time since I was at school. To be honest, do I need reflexive verbs in my travels?!?! I keep waking up at night reciting verbs...that is not good!
Been on a few more outings around and about, including one to a village called San Andreas (I think) where we visited San Simon in a church of some sorts. He is some kind of god to the locals...they give him alcohol and cigars and light different coloured candles to him and pray. Each coloured candle means something different eg Red for love, blue for travel and study etc etc. There was some kind of priest in the church casting spells (or something) out of a few women by hitting them with leaves and twigs and blowing in their faces....quite odd! He told me off for taking a photo in the church so hopefully I have not been cursed! Afterwards we visited a Catholic Church - I think the teacher taking us on the tour wanted to cleanse himself after being at San Simon as he clearly did not believe in the goings on in the 1st church.
Yesterday did a Salsa class at school...highly entertaining. If you know me, I am not overly co-ordinated and probably need a few drinks before thinking I can dance. Unfortunately for me I got stuck with the weird guy who thinks he is the king of Salsa and was taking it all very seriously and thrusting me around. I was trying to keep a straight face and focus on my feet! It was disastrous!
I am still staying at the school which is really convenient and I have decided to have my breakfasts and lunches here....they have someone cooking meals. Well I am not sure how much longer I will be eating their meals as they are pretty revolting to say the least. I try not look at what is on my plate and just spoon the food into my mouth. As for the cloth they use to wash the dishes with...OMG I think it has been around as long as the school...Alison you would die!
The weather has not been great this week and raining quite a bit. I have this bright red plastic poncho raincoat thing I found...I look fabulous! I was laughing to myself as I wandered around the supermarket in my over sized red plastic poncho / raincoat as I pictured myself doing the same in Woolworths in Ponsonby....I think they would throw me out...HA!
Anyway I am really enjoying myself now and this weekend head away to Coban and Semuc Champey with about 4 other students. I think after my studies I will head to Rio Dulce and do some volunteer work at an orphanage there called Casa Guatemala...so that is about 3 weeks away. Hope you are all well. xxx
